What can someone do with socket programing inside and outside hacking?

Well, sockets are used almost everywhere where any type of network activity is required
That includes, but is not limited to Packet Sniffer Programming (Example of a program: Wireshark), Packet Injection and sometimes, exploit development (when we are developing an exploit on another host on our network) or maybe you can make your own Port Scanner or any type of Scanner that Scans another remote host on any type of network infrastructure(e.g LAN, Internet)
Now again, there are a lot more stuff that you can do, once you actually get into the Network and Socket Programming World :)
