I've got two ideas of raising funds:
flattr - http://flattr.com/ and bitcoin.
Would be easier to donate if the were a paypal account too.
Greetings
Geekpirat
-- Keep going! You're doing an unbelievable awesome job! :)
Awesome!
not much but a little thing i settled up please sir have a look..
https://www.facebook.com/groups/stusersgroup?ap=1
and everyone please join us.. all securitytubers are most welcome...
I agree with Geekpirat. A quick/easy way to donate is through Paypal. After each video you can include a short message for people willing to donate something to donate through Paypal. I do not mind donating something every month. I visit securitytube.net multiple times everyday.
You could design some Fan-Gear like T-Shirts or Baseball-Caps with Securitytube.net writing and/or the Hackers-Badge Logo too. ;) 2 in 1 -> Comercial and Money.
well that's really big amount u are paying for the site sir.
Survey is the best IDEA to make some revenue out of the site for ur work and for site development.
Maybe guest will not like doing surveys in order to watch the video but you can put a survey on the page if someone views more then 5 videos at a time or so.
idea can be changed or modified as per ur thinking.
Thanks for all ur time and love.
offtopic: Don't mind my grammer :D
I agree on the need for sharing the burden of cost. I'm completely okay with ads. Whatever you have to do. A pledgie account is also a possibility(used for many open source projects). As far as google app hosting - the price for scalability is HIGH. Sorry about that. I try ti contribute by providing content(I don't have money to give). On the other hand, I do get a little tired of people on the QA side wanting cut and paste solutions...
Just my 2 cents.
Something I should specifically note: On the Q and A side, I stopped giving out 'drop-in' code section answers. I still answer the theory part of the question, but you are not the only one that feels that there is some component of an imbalance problem here.
Vivek, I want to say thank you for what you are doing very much, and all you do is appreciated!!!!! Please keep up the hard work you do, as you help many people learn about infosec, and how to secure their own networks, regardless if they post or not, the numbers speak for themselves.
Great to here you're committed to your vision.
Keep up the amazing work!
great journey.
thanks for making videos bro.
keep up the journey.
we are with you.
Keep up the great work....and add a donate button or something. I'm a bit leary of bitcoin....but paypal would be nice.
Keep up the good work. A donate button through paypal is a great idea.
great Journy so far ,i am feeling lucky to be a part of this community and having a teacher like u ...
also u have clear voice..
i will love to donate when i have money.
Thanx man for the clarification 100% supporting and don't worry if you want any help for the time on the site or any thing just ask man, i think the community full of advanced technical geeks ready to help. eg."Ruby4Hackers,PythonForHackers".
Thanks All for the Comments.
I have gathered the following as feedback till now:
1. Start donations - Flattr, Paypal, Pledgie,
2. Design T-Shirts / Baseball Caps etc. (Anyone would like to volunteer to help?)
3. Surveys - Only worry is many a times this is too intrusive and the survey may be totally on an unrelated topic
@Andrew - yes, I think you are doing the right thing. Cut-Paste can never help anyone learn
@toms12 I look forward to Andrew, Patrick and others contributing more material
@Infogeek I would want to do this in a different way. Also, everything should be on ST and not on different sites like Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter. Will just make it difficult for people to decide where ti post.
Please keep your feedback coming!
Have a look at the comment Vivek just posted. I am posting this, so that all commenters receive an email alert :)
One of the things I can recommend is Certifications. I have seen very few certifications in Wireless Security.
I think many of us already have used your videos to study for other certification exams and at least I would be happy to pay for the exam and the certificate.
What do you all think?
1. in order to save bandwidth you MUST move all videos served from securitytube's server to vimeo or any other video serving site (metasploit videos for example)
2. people can watch videos for free, but you can give online private lessons in charge, I would pay for a private lesson from you.
3. VIP area - for paying\donating users with restricted materials \ videos and boards for discussions, with moderators and all to help the members \ students.
4. SecurityTube Academe.. why not? it can be a huge thing!
5. put adsense (if security isn't considered as a violation of google's TOS) all over the site, in all of it's parts.
6. off course, donations! I personally know of 5-6 people who will donate, start and see, you can add a donation status bar every month so we'll know whats going on.
7. preview ads on your videos (like hak5's sponsors)
Best of luck!
I have a quite crazy idea, it works and actually worked for many: Create an underground team, not to do any damage to anyone, but to leave a fingerprint in the "market", this WILL attract thousands of people if not more, to learn how things are being done, and through private lessons as YS mentioned, wherein you will learn the real things, the site will be fully sponsored and flourishing.
@YS "Hacking/cracking content" is against the ToS, not sure if the educational part of it swings well enough with Google.
Think the hak5 sponsor thing is a cool idea tho.
Vivek,
I am new to security and your video's have taught me a lot. I really appreciate all the hard work you put in and the whole idea of free training.
PayPal Button would be first solution.
Selling T-shirts and other stuff could be possible.
If you could get like free stuff that you could auction like tickets, books, other security related stuff.
I am also willing to get involved in anyway I can just let me know.
I have followed your site for 2 or 3 years now and I will be happy to donate on a monthly basis. I agree with the donate button and security tube "gear". I have no problem with the ads, in fact; have you seen sites that the background of the main web page is one large ad? Certainly companies out there will shell out 1000 to 2000 US dollars to be plastered on your home page for a month at a time. Also the HAK5 suggestions for commercial ideas is good. Check out Revision3 TV for more ideas.
Concerning conferences in the US get in touch Kerry Nelson from SecureWorld. They host multiple secureworld expos all across the US and I believe you would be a huge draw for them.
Thanks for all you have sacrificed to benefit the global infosec community.
@ YS

1. Its not that easy, Vimeo must be payed also
2. No. ST concept is not about that
3. Definitely a NO. SecurityTube isnt a script kiddie forum with lame VIP areas. NO, no and no.
4. Academe?
5. Adsense all over the site? This is not link bucks, and the goal is not to destroy the site with ads for personal profit. The goal is to provide free education and cover the costs of doing that.
6...
7. Sponsors are most welcome, but ads on videos, I'm sure they are not. Its cheesy.
I wonder who is "we" in securitytube :D
Vivek,
First of all, thank you so much for the time and money you have pushed into Security Tube! I can't thank you enough for all that I have learned on this site.
As for funding, I think you should implement a mechanism for quick donations. I know that I would have donated multiple times already if there was an easy donation process in place.
Google Ads on the other hand, I'm not so sure... I don't know if anyone, given the target demographic of this site, would actually click on them? Perhaps I'm wrong but I would bet a much larger proportion of the ST user-base would be willing to click on a donate button and know they were supporting the site directly.
Anyway, keep up the GREAT work, hopefully I will see a donate button soon... my clicking finger is getting itchy!!
Vivek, thank a lot for all your work and help. I will donate monthly without problem. I was thinking some time ago about how to help you keep teaching us with your awesome videos.
Please Keep going, and add paypal donate button :D
@ Vivek
The Shirts can be printed at http://www.shirtinator.co.uk/ (or spreadshirt) there are tons of shops like them.
(Sometimes they also have Caps, Bags, Hoodies etc.)
Greetings
Geekpirat
Geekpirat ask me if i want to make some logos or some thing else.
And now i have Holidays so i try to make some.
Maybe you can Post some ideas for the logos.
have fun,
2Light
I'm somewhat late to this thread as I've been busy myself! I'm astonished by the level of the monthly charge that you have to meet in providing this first class service. Previous posters have said everything I don't have anything to add, other than I am more than willing to make a financial contribution to the running of the site. I don't like the idea of ads, but they're necessary until some other regular income stream has been generated.
I'm sure that many viewers can help in the short term by buying your WiFi security book that is due out imminently and also your Metasploit book that is next in line for publication. I know from personal experience that royalties from book publication don't amount to much (unless your name happens top be J K Rowling!), but it's a small way that many of us can help ... and at the same time obtain a tangible reminder of the great work that you have done for the IT security community.
hi vivek ,,rajesh here..ur really very nice..many of them of dying to learn things about hacking ..this st is providing everything they want..this website is really a boon for peoples like us...
thank you for this wonderful journey of urs..
ur making us knowleagble about security related terms..i would like to know about u more..can u pls send ur mail id to my email id pls..
boomiuth7@gmail.com..
m from chennai.
thank you sir...
waiting for ur reply sir....
pls do for me sir..pls..pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls
Hey,
first thank you for securitytube.net, really a great site.
But you need one thing from your old site and that is the grouping of the videos in categories. It was way more efficient to find certain videos with the old securitytube website. Please, please include that to this site too.
Greetings from Germany
Hi Vivek
I think the easiest thing would be a Paypal button as just about everyone else above has also suggested this and it would work for me.
In addition the promo items is an excellent idea, shirts, caps and so forth, I would purchase this sort of stuff.
Also, what about a MegaPrimer offline kit i.e. put together some DVD's of your Megaprimer series with some extra things like all the tools required etc.
This would be handy for people who travel on planes etc or who have low bandwidth.
Keep going with all your plans and I'm sure everyone will help you.
Cheers
I would like to see you put each megaprimer series on a DVD, along with some DVD-only content (like a shortcut sheet that lists out all the commands used in each video and its purpose) and sell them for (let's say) $20. This model is already in use by open-source companies.
A person could still download all your videos for free (I actually ending up joining vimeo for a month just so I could do this all at once without their bandwidth limitations) and burn them to a dvd themselves so the free model would still exist. But others would appreciate having that already done for them and would be willing to a pay a small amount for that service, especially if they know they're doing it as a sort of donation.
i second, third, or whatever....the DVD idea. This would be beneficial for slow people like me that need to watch the videos several times :). This could save on bandwidth and video hosting costs also. I realize i could spend the time to figure out how to dload or capture the video stream, but i'd rather just grab a dvd with the videos and possibly the powerpoint slides...or something.
Vivek sir, please complete your videos on worm and other topics which is already published on security-freak. i already requested many times for those videos which is already published long time ago and topics of those videos are really very good. other then that all the things are awesome keep it up, soon i will also start contributing this site.
Great work thanks a lot
Hello All,
Thanks for all of these encouraging comments and offer to help. I am really overwhelmed by the response. I am thinking about a lot of options you all have proposed and will get back by this week.
In the meantime, I have created a donate page and the link will be prominently displayed to the right of every video. I would request people who offered to donate to please use the link.
A direct link is here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/embeddedform?formkey=dElveFlBMnhYcjJPUXlsNkVhTnpOakE6MQ
Just one quick point, please don't buy the book to support the website. Only purchase, if you need and find use for it. It would be better to donate directly to the website via the donations link as this money will be used entirely for SecurityTube.
Thanks again! I am really in love with the website and the community here :)

Seconding the securitytube tshirts and or apparel idea. I would totally rock a securitytube shirt.
I really like the idea or T shirts would not mind having a go at some design for them too.
@John-Nash its an option I am strongly considering already. Thanks!
@YS, as netinfinity mentioned already, restricted content for VIP users is ruled out. I could offer an AD free version for a small amount per month, but will think about it. Private lessons are an interesting idea but not sure if I will be able to really scale that will all the other work I do. The preview ADs is a good idea, let me see if I can get someone. Thanks!
@Disturbed Interesting :) but how do we propose we leave our "fingerprint" :)
@CS.Rakowski Yes, I agree. Nothing illegal was ever posted anyways. Also, with the new cms, only videos uploaded to Youtube and Vimeo can be posted to the website, so we are not the primary hosters of content anymore.
@Jamie.R Thanks for all the feedback! and thank you for donating already :) We really appreciate it.
@securitytubewhyjoseph Hope you are doing great my friend! I agree with you entirely. Would be able to make an introduction to Kerry if you know him personally? We are already connected on Linkedin and we could take this discussion there.
@ZippyMorph Thanks for offering to donate my friend. We will need all the help we can from the community. The google ads thing works decently but not sufficient to pay all the bills and expand further.
@xsurf Thanks my friend! I have put up the donations link now, please feel free to donate and help us.
@Geekpirat Nice! Would it make sense to locate 3-4 such companies in different continents, so we can save on the shipping costs and ensure people use the on-demand shop closest to them? Next point - we need a T-Shirt and Mug designer for SecurityTube :)
@2Light write to me, I am sure we could use your artistic skills with the T-shit and Mug designs :)
@Ignatius Thanks buddy! We could really use the donation. As mentioned previously in my last comment, buying the book might not be the right way to support the website and of course your point on royalties is correct. If you would like to support the site, then donating to the site directly would be better.
@booms, Machinist sure guys! I will try my best to make more videos and post them
@Raven Sure, I agree regrouping is a required thing! Just need some spare time to site with it.
@kman, WCNA, benderbord I like the DVD idea. I am happy to provide a PDF copy of the slides which I use for my trainings as an extra something as an incentive to purchase the DVD. Of course, all the videos on the DVD will be on the site too. The Wi-Fi Megaprimer is currently around 3GB, which is larger than most OS distributions as well :)
@Aoi, Jamie.R Yes, I think T-shirts and apparels are a great idea! I need some designers to help me :) Let me put a shootout for them soon on Twitter and Facebook.
Thanks for all the comments guys! What makes me really emotional is that I see so many of you truly care for SecurityTube and the cause of free infosec education for everyone. I am proud to part of this great community!
-Vivek Ramachandran
@ Vivek
I have compared Shirtinator and Spreadshirt and so far it seems it wouldn't make a real difference. IMHO Spreadshirt would be the best choice because they deliver worldwide with moderate delivery fees.
I've already contacted a friend of mine as a designer. 2Light will write you soon. ;)
Bah! Late to the party!
With regards to the swag idea, I think it's great. Why not do what BSidesLondon did and open the designs up as a competition? Have people submit their designs and then cast a vote for the favourite.
Also not sure if it was mentioned earlier, but stickers! Hackers go mad for stickers! with a decent original design you'll sell a ton and they are pretty cheap to get made up.
Maybe there's a training provider out there that would be willing to help out in exchange for some ads? We have a large community of people eager to learn here, so it shouldn't be too hard to sell :)
I personally think that the infosec community needs to invest far more time in this sort of education for people new to the scene - education is one of the key things we are supposed to do after all!
Keep up the great work, this site hosts some of the best content on the net!
@numeric - I couldn't agree with most of it more...although I think education isn't the thing that 'the scene' should be looking for...
I think it should be looking for independent learning. This in no way diminishes the awesome work Vivek and others have done here. What I mean to express is that with the incredible foundation provided by things like this site, the industry should be looking for someone who has absolutely no OJT experience, but takes things a step further completely on their own. These are the really sharp people. On the other hand, what do I know...I'm an unemployed armchair fellow at the moment.
On the competition for designs - excellent idea.
On the sticker idea - also excellent. I worked with a fellow that got vinyl stickers printed in about double the size of a 8-1/2x11 and cut them to size with a paper-cutter. Cost was about 10 cents each. Sale value was $1. They weigh almost nothing so shipping is cheap.
Training provider - maybe...do you really think that finding paid training candidates will occur largely on a free site? On the other hand, I think that's what cccure.org is all about.
Again, thanks for the input. I'm sure any and all perspectives are appreciated as long as they're reasonably constructive.
@Geekpirat - I have seen lots of people using Spreadshirt. There are a lot of printing on demand places popping up now that screen printing equipment is getting cheap. I would worry about not using one of the huge name sites due to possible supply chain issues. Spreadshirt should not have that problem. +1 to spreadshirt
@all - Thanks for helping out the site. I'm not affiliated with it in any fashion other than user, but I share the benefit and try to contribute some video/QandA time so...thanks.
@Mr.Ramachandran,
--Thank you very much for ur time and effort that kept for posting up lot of videos on this site.
-@ Securitytube Members : With all due respect,I agree with most suggestions (Ads,Caps,Tshirts,Paypal).
Apart from these, If we try to arrange the workshops in the respective regions, stated in the above video by members who are residing in that Local region/Near by. that would be more helpful.
@Vivek: If you have any plans to start up a workshop on PT in Hyd. please let me know,so that i can try to engage with some of security Training Institutes.
Regards,
Gopi Kiran.
A securitytube t-shirt!
I would literally buy 5 of them and wear them every day of the week.
It's really cool that you are so transparent and share the traffic with us, a lot of webmasters like to keep it secret for some silly reason.
Vivek you truly are an amazing person, how you made so many videos over the years and survived I am clueless. I made 4 short & to the point videos in one week and I felt like I couldn't keep up with spending time with my girlfriend & my daily life. You have a lot of information in that brain of yours and we are all truly grateful that you choose to share it for us. Everyone whose browses this site should take at least one of the certifications you offer to give back to you and help them selves out with their own career. Once again thanks for sharing your wisdom with all of us Vivek. Happy Holidays to you and all which are right around the corner.
